The ‘Divas and Divos’ of Ikebana helped usher in the CNY in style at the Szechuan Fan Dian Restaurant of the Mandarin Orchard Hotel on 15 January.
Members and guests arrived dressed beautifully in Chinoiserie, adding a special touch to this special occasion in the II calendar. Before proceeding to the restaurant, they were able to admire the exhibition by members and buy CNY goodies.
Six of our experienced members representing the Ikenobo, Ohara and Sogetsu schools, delighted the audience with their demonstration. 3 teachers of the schools, each with one of their students, demonstrated simultaneously using the identical containers and flower materials.
The fun part started with ‘Lo Hei’. All the ingredients for this delicious and very Singaporean CNY dish have a symbolic value which was announced as each ingredient was added into the beautiful dish before everybody helped to ‘toss the fish’ while reciting good wishes for the new year. More traditional dishes followed.
In between courses we enjoyed soothing Chinese music as well as a parade of ‘butterflies’ with their delightful wearable flowers created by our member Harijanto Setiawan.
A game of ‘Bingo’ and a lucky draw created much merriment. The ‘God of Fortune’ ensured that everybody was lucky with an ‘Ang Bao’. All too soon it was time to say good bye with wishes of ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’ echoing throughout the hotel.
