A SPARKLING CHRISTMAS WITH HARIJANTO
Wednesday 5 December, Shangri-La Hotel
It was indeed a Sparkling Christmas with traditional and sparkling floral designs which decorated the reception area, members and guests in sparkling attire, a fantastic demonstration of sparkling Christmas designs by Harijanto Setiawan, the beautiful setting in the sparkling Ballroom of the Shangri La Hotel which provided a traditional Christmas lunch.
Harijanto broke the ice with a game where each table had to decorate Ms Beach – Christmas in the tropics. After much hilarity, members and guests were entertained with Christmas songs and dance by the Jazz Kids of the Academy of the Arts.
After a delicious lunch Harijanto sparkled with his inspiring Christmas designs. A toast to Ikebana and Friendship through Flowers and a sparkling Lucky Draw concluded the happy event.

The Newcomers Afternoon Tea and Ikebana Demonstration
New members and guests were invited to meet commmittee and long term members for an afternooon to get to know each other on Wednesday, 14 November 2012. The event was kindly hosted by member Sara Taseer at her jewellery shop spoiling attandees with a delicious afternoon tea.
No II function can be without flowers. Our Immediate Past President, Anna Kwan, gave a delightful demonstration including one of the special containers made by Datin Ong Kid Ching. After the demonstration President Marvina introduced those new members who were able to attend. A very enjoyable afternoon was had by all.
Sogetsu Association Singapore
On 26 October II members participated in the Sogetsu exhibition and supported the 46 Anniversary Gala Dinner cum Floral demonstration of the Sogetsu Association. The event was in aid of Children’s Cancer Foundation. Mrs Kim, President of the Association, welcomed honoured guests. The evening was graced by Mrs Mary Tan, wife of the President of Singapore and HE Yoichi Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan.
Mr Bernard Tay, Pandora Ip, Tsng Bee Lan delighted the audience with a design each, followed by a joined masterpiece by Mrs Kim and Guest Ikebana Sogetsu Master from Japan, Mr Ken Katayama.
During a scrumptious dinner, Ezra, who at age of 11 is a cancer survivor and beneficiary of CCF, gave a rendition of Amazing Grace. Members of the Tenko Lion Dance troupe entertained the audience with a vigorous dance and drumming performance. Valuable pieces of floral art, paintings and jewellery were auctioned off to increase the donation to the chosen charity. What a wonderful way to spend an evening among friends, surrounded by beautiful flowers and doing good at the same time.
2012 Annual General Meeting
The AGM took place on Wednesday 10 October at the Pines Club. Mrs Anna Kwan, our immediate Past President welcomed members before calling the meeting to order. After the official business was successfully concluded, our new President, Mrs Marvina Low welcomed everybody and introduced the new committee.

The introduction was followed by demonstrations by Dr Leonard Lim, Ikenobo, Datin Ong Kid Ching, Ohara and Mr Christopher Lim, Sogetsu, whose creations were very much admired by members and guests.

A delicious lunch was enjoyed by all and many members and guests left happily with their lucky door prizes.
The opening of the exhibition of Paintings by Jennifer Liao and Ikebana exhibition by chapter members, took place on 3 October at the Japanese Creative Centre. Minister Counsellor Mr. Toshihide Ando opened the proceeding. The Director of JCC and the Deputy Chief of Mission from the Embassy of Japan also supported the event together with members, friends and family.
The exhibition continued till 10 October. It was wonderful to see the beautiful paintings of Japanese landscape framed by beautiful ikebana designs.

FLOWER ARRANGEMENT DEMONSTRATION Sunday 6 October.
As part of the exhibition, our members Hatsumi Kanatsu, Sogetsu School and Momoko Emmott, Ryusei-Ha School gave a very informative demonstration. Using the same materials, they highlighted some of the main points of the philosophy of their ikebana schools. They were ably assisted by Mr Bernard Tay who also gave general background information on ikebana. The demonstration was well supported by members and guests.

550 Ikenobo Anniversary Exhibition in Macau
Macau Ikenobo Study Group held their first Ikenobo exhibition and demonstration on 26 – 28 September to celebrate the 550th Ikenobo Anniversary.
Our member, Dr Leonard Lim, President of the Ikenobo Ikebana Association Singapore Chapter was the main demonstrator at a delightful Gala Dinner celebrating this milestone event.
Demonstration in Johor Bahru
Our Membership Chairman, Momoko Emmott, was invited by Johor Bahru Chapter to be the demonstrator of Ryusei-ha Ikebana at their meeting in Johor Bahru on 18 September. The meeting was held at an Indonesian restaurant at the Indonesia Corner in Desa Cemerlang, JB
Momoko, with the assistance of Singapore Chpater member Mr Bernard Tay created 5 beautiful designs revealing the different styles of Ryusei-ha. Momoko felt very privileged to use the beautiful and unique handcrafted containers made by JP Past President Datin Ong Kid Ching
Momoko’s demonstration was followed by a scrumptious Indonesian high tea. As always Singapore members were very warmely welcomed and a wonderful afternoon with beautiful flowers, freindship and good food was had by all.
The Annual Exhibition took place at the Adrium, Paragon, Orchard Road from 16 – 26 August 16-26th 2012 with the opening ceremony for members and invited guests on 16 August. It was a great success with countless visitors enjoying the beautifully staged exhibition.
Our Chapter was particularly honoured and thankful to have Mr Kosen Ohtsubo, Headmaster of ‘Ryusei-Ha’ School of Ikeban, Tokyo design and execute the Chapter Exhibit as well as his individual exhibits.
A huge thank you to all participants for all their creativity as well as time and effort in bringing our beautiful art to the attention of the public.
Ikebana 43 Birthday Celebration Charity Gala Dinner
On 8 August over 300 members and guests celebrated the 43rd Chapter birthday in style at the Shangri-La Hotel Island Ballroom. It was an evening of friendship with flowers, Japanese culture and delicious food.
The evening started off with a Taiko performance followed by Japanese drama before Mr Kosen Ohtsubo, Headmaster of ‘Ryusei-Ha’ School of Ikebana, Tokyo, took the stage. With near to 50 yaers experience he awed the audience with his artistry, as did the ballet dancers who accompanied the artistic progress.
Both sponsors and participants have to be thanked for their generosity. Much was given from the heart to benefit the Charity ‘Food from the Heart’.
As with all Singapore Chapter events, the committee and friends worked tirelessly to bring ikebana to a large audience and at the same time contributing to a very worthy cause.

The annual Tabanaka celebrations took place on 26 July at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Our President Mrs Anna Kwan and II members , Mrs Joyce Tan and Mrs Hiroko Prado delighted visitors and guests with a demonstration of two beautiful designs each. Members of II took part in the mini exhibition.

A delightful afternoon was had by all
Congratulations to our member, Harijanto Setiawan, who represented the Floral Designers Society (Singapore) at the Singapore Garden Festival ‘Floral Window to the World’ competition. He not only won gold but also Best in Show in this class. Harijanto’s outstandingly beautiful and innovative design drew the growds at the Garden Festival and was a cut above the rest. Designers included renowned international floral artists from Europe and Asia. Well done Harijanto. We are proud of you.

I I SINGAPORE CHAPTER 135 ELECTION MEETING
The Election Meeting took place on Wednesday, 30th May at the Balmoral Room, Royal Plaza on Scotts, Scotts Road and was well attended with the following being elected to take office in September:

After the official business was completed, members and guests were treated to a wonderful spread of delightful Hi Tea favourites provided by the Hotel.
Our member, Kazuko Okawa, gave a splendid demonstration in both traditional Ikenobo and Free style arrangements.
The meeting ended with a lucky draw for five happy winners.

A TRIP TO THE COUNTRYSIDE
A floral workshop was organsied in the countryside at the home in Kranchi by Florist Extraordinaire Edwin Pereira.
Members and guests were warmly welcomed by Edwin who invited everybody to a scrumptious lunch made with fresh incredients from his gardens.
We were then instructed on how to create a beautiful table design for the busy housewife with plants before being instructed on how to make a Terranium, a bottle garden with its own eco system.
Members and guests were taken on a tour through the beautiful as well as extensive gardens. Everybody enjoyed a delicious Eurasian tea. What a wonderful way to spent a few hours in the beautiful and countryside of Singapore.
AN EASTER CELEBRATORY LUNCH
A Floral Demonstration by florist extraordinaire, Edwin Pereira, took place on Monday 26 March at the Tanglin Club with the theme of “The Miracle of Easter”

Ohara School of Ikebana Singapore Chapter
On 13 March II members came out in large numbers to support the 28th AGM of the Ohara School of Ikebana Singapore Chapter which took place at the LiBai Restaurant, Sheraton Hotel Singapore. We were treated to a very impressive demonstration by Mrs Aiko Nakada, Ohara Master from Melbourne, who enthralled everybody with her explanations as she demonstrated each master piece. Some of the plant material was brought from Japan including beautiful Cherry Blossom. Everybody also admired the delightful exhibition by Ohara members. High Tea and a time of cameradery was enjoyed by all who attended.
Johor Bahru Chapter 235
presented ‘A Hawaiian Valentine Celebration’ on 11 February at the Blue Wave Hotel.
Members from Singapore Chapter were warmly welcomed for an afternoon of fun friendship and fashion.
JB members modelled the fine modern Batik clothes by “Pink Jambu”.
Members and guests were treated to a scrumtious high tea, entertained with life music, a fun competition where each table chose a ‘victim’ to be dressed up as hula dancer, flowers and all. The afternoon concluded only too quickly and President Serena was presented with one of the beautiful Valentine’s decorations which adorned the tables. A fun afternoon was had by all.
A Date with Spring
On 2 February II members shared a splendid Date with Spring at the Sogetsu Association Lunar New Year Celebrations at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. A Floral Demonstration by Mrs Tsng Bee Lan was followed by traditional Lo Hei and lunch. The mini exhibition by Sogetsu members, inspired by the Lunar New Year, was enjoyed by members and guests. Ang Baos were handed out by the God of Fortune and a Dragon Dance completed a very successful event.
Peranakan Chinese New Year Celebrations and Flower Exhibition
‘A Thousand Peonies Blossom’
The new Lunar New was celebrated in style on 11 January at the Imperial ballroom of the Mandarin Hotel. A very informative and inspiring demonstration by Dr Leonard Lim, President of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society Singapore Chapter was followed by the traditional Lo Hei and a scrumptious Perankan lunch. During lunch we were entertained by the Peranakan Singers. Prizes were given to the ladies with the best Peranakan theme inspired dresses. Members put up a mini exhibition reflecting the theme. A great time was had by members and friends.
Dr Lim also presented a demonstration and exhibition at Suntec City mall which was enjoyed by passers by as well as II and Ikenobo members.
